Dale Goetschius has spent 37 years building StarMark Cabinetry® from within, starting in the finishing department sanding cabinets before moving through the factory floor, customer service, and eventually sales. For over 25 years, he's also had StarMark Cabinetry installed in his own home, a testament to his personal confidence in the product he represents.

That experience shapes how Dale talks with homeowners at StarMark Cabinetry's Sioux Falls showroom who are weighing custom cabinets against ready-to-install stock options. He won't oversell the custom argument, but he'll make it clear.

“Most people will have the opportunity to do their dream kitchen once, maybe twice in their lifetime,” Dale explains. The real question isn't just what's affordable now, but what you'll still want, and what will still be standing in 20 years.

StarMark Cabinetry has backed that argument since 1977. Founded in Sioux Falls and now operating under MasterBrand Cabinetry®, the company builds every cabinet to order, sized precisely to an eighth of an inch. “We can make the cabinet fit the space rather than throw a standard-size cabinet and maybe throw a filler,” Dale says. In tight kitchens, awkward bathrooms, and built-ins with nowhere else to go, that precision matters: modular cabinetry patches problems with fillers, while StarMark Cabinetry builds a cabinet for the exact opening.

The finish options are hard to overstate. StarMark Cabinetry offers 37 standard paint colors and will also match any color a customer brings in through its Paint by Number program, done over 1,000 times, including once matching a kitchen island to a customer's shoe in a color of blue that the customer loved. Combined with eight wood species (red oak, quarter-sawn white oak, maple, cherry, alder, hickory, and others) and hand-rubbed distressing options, the possible combinations run past 900,000. No two StarMark cabinets look quite the same.

That variety doesn't come at the expense of construction quality. The factory uses CNC machinery for precise, consistent cutting, but from there each cabinet is assembled, glued, sanded, stained, and finished by hand with dovetail drawer boxes, French mitered face frames and panels that hide corner seams, and soft-close hinges and slides as standard.

Every employee is empowered to reject any piece they wouldn't accept in their own home—a bad knot, an uneven stain pass, a stray saw mark. “We empower our staff to make those decisions,” Dale adds, “because we don't want to pass that to the customer.” A culture of quality control doesn't come from software; it comes from people who take the work personally.

Materials meet the same bar: drawer boxes, face frames, and door frames are solid hardwood; box interiors are plywood; MDF or MDO appears only where paint adhesion requires it. Hardwood is sourced largely from North America—oaks from Minnesota and Wisconsin, cherry from farther east.

The cabinetry carries a lifetime warranty on hinges, slides, and general construction. Dale's own cabinets have held up for 25 years without issue—not an exception, but the expectation.

The process begins at the Sioux Falls showroom, where StarMark's design team uses CAD software and full-color 3D rendering to work with customers—whether they arrive with inspiration folders or just a sense they're ready for something new. Homeowners leave with a full view of their finished space before a single board is cut.

From there, the cabinet is built to the design, the design is built to the space, and the space becomes something a homeowner is still proud of when it's time to hand the house to someone else.

Most people get one shot at their dream kitchen. StarMark Cabinetry is built to make it last.
